Khaya Mahogany is light pink and medium brown to reddish brown in color. Khaya Mahogany is superior in strength to Sapele Mahogany, another African Mahogany used in the construction of the guitar. It has a relatively coarse texture which is sometimes interlocked, sometimes straight. Interlocked grain produces a striped figure on quartersawn surfaces (best for guitars). As most species Khaya Mahogany Mahogany guitars are warm and clear with good balance
. Other Mahogany familiar luthiers are Sapele Mahogany. Cylindricum Entandrophragma found in West, Central negro and East African rain forest, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Zaire and Tanzania. Sapele Mahogany timber has salmon pink heartwood and pale yellow outward. pink heartwood can change to red brown with age. Sapele Mahogany wood has close texture with interlocking grain which changes in direction and can be regularly striped. Also may be unusually large pores, interspersed with small pores band. Wavy grain produces very intense fiddleback or mottled figures do seem very 3D. Sapele Mahogany tonewood is heavier than other African Mahogany, but not as severe.
Ovangkol is relatively new to guitar building. Ehie Guibourtia, also known as Mozambique, Shedua, Amazoue and Amazakoue found in West Africa, negro Ivory Coast, Ghana, southern Nigeria and Gabon.
